Dodgy ear ‘fullness’/hearing loss?
DarkFlame asked:
Hey,
I’m a little worried about my hearing in my right ear. I just got an iPod and I’ve been listening to music a bit too loud, for about an hour tops. At the end of listening to the music, my ears have hurt slightly and also had a ringing effect, but I thought nothing of it.
Here’s what’s wrong, my right ear feels blocked, muffled or ‘full’ if you will. It feels like pressure.. as if it needs to pop, but I’ve tried (blocking noise + blowing) but it doesn’t seem to work. There is some slight pain in the ear, though not too harsh. I think I suffer from TMJ (jaw thing) so I think that may be connected… however, I have had a few colds on and off, and whenever I get a cold my ears always go deaf, temporarily. I got a cold a few days ago and my noise was blocked… I just don’t know what it is…
I’m hoping its temporary.. a friend at school went deaf in his left ear permanently from a rugby accident… the thing is, the hearing loss is very minor, it just feels ‘bunged up’. Should I go to a doctor? I’ve tried putting my head under the water in the bath, and that fixed it for a few seconds (10-20) and ‘adjusting’ my ear (pushing the door thing to the ear) which fixes it… the hearing them returns.. it’s weird… it’s like someones pressing on it or something expanded inside.. help??

You’ve had a cold thats gone to ear thats all. The congestion in your head has filled up the inner part of your ear, the inside part of your ear drum. I had it back at the start of the year, I thought my ear was going to explode on New years eve. The ringing drove me bonkers, and the pressure was so bad it worried me sick.
My doctor gave me antibiotics to stop it turning into a full on infection so you may want to see your doc.
Avoid the iPod being too loud for a while. If you have anything too loud it will make the ringing worse, add to the pressure and may in the worst case burst your ear drum.
It will take a while to get better though, mine took nearly 3 weeks, I was begining to think i was deaf for life

Dear Dark Flame
The background you describe to your symptoms, sounds like a ‘grumbling’ ear infection and I would also think you have a hard wax problem which would account for the feeling of being bunged up. The colds you describe causing your symptoms sound very much like a generalized infection of the ear, nose and throat.
As for using your iPod in this ear, this is a definite NO NO. You will exacerbate any underlying problem.
You need to seek medical advice, an auditory examination will establish if you do have a wax problem and can get rid of this. You may need a course of antibiotics to clear the infection.
You must protect your ears in the way you use your iPod. Once the delicate hairs of your cochlea are damaged, they do not recover, this results in permanent hearing loss.
I hope this information is useful to you
My best wishes
Maureen
