How to prevent hearing loss when playing in a band?

Justin A asked:

I’ve always been a lover of punk/emo/screamo music. I recently started learning how to play the bass guitar so i could start a “garage band” with a couple of my friends. I don’t want to be a serious musician I just want to have something to do to survive high school. How do i protect my hearing so I’m not deaf when I’m thirty? My goal is to hear just like i did before I joined the band; no hearing loss whatsoever. Any advice?
Will ear plugs provide 100% protect to my ears?

Just like *** the only real way to avoid (pregnancy) or hearing loss is abstinence. LOL On a serious note though definitely wear ear plugs. They work great as long as you insert them in your ears properly. Typically the yellow ones you roll into a tiny tube and insert the thing pretty much all the way in your ear. If it sticks out it is not in right. You can buy the disposable ear plugs from the pharmacy for cheap. If you ever have ringing in your ears after a practice that is not the end of the world, but is a sign that you need to amp up your ear protection maybe go with something custom made or maybe the ear plugs weren’t in right. Audiologists make custom plugs for $50 to $100.

I applaud you for being so smart about this so many young people are not and they WILL regret it later.
